Dear ISOCARD Members

Greetings!

To begin with, I would like to congratulate you all for establishing and supporting this organization and the exceptional role that it plays in encouraging studies of camelid sciences and promoting the scientific publications in camelid fields.

To assist in supporting the same objectives and to show the outstanding quality of the camel as highlighted in the Quran, I decided to establish a Camel Center in the UAE.

The plan is to create an attraction where we target tourists and residences of the country from all ages.

The vision has three main goals:

1. Raising public awareness of camels and their relationship with the Bedouins/mankind.

2. Establishing a center of excellence for camel education in the UAE.

3. Displaying living camels and all the camelid family.

I have prepared a brief for the camel Center, however I thought your support and inputs will enhance this project and add to my brief to enrich this center in achieving its’ vision.

To give you some idea about what the Camel Center brief has, below is a list of some services that will take place in the center:

1. Educational facilities

2. Library room

3. Class/seminar room

4. Coffee shop

5. Gift shop

6. Vet room

7. Visiting center (educational) to exhibit environmental pictures & animal parts

8. Camel Ride Area

Therefore, I would like to request you to provide me with any suggestions that will add services and facilities

Salmonellosis in camels

I had recently a camel in the hospital for chronic weight loss and diarrhea. The camel was loaded with trichostrongyle type eggs and on bacterial culture of the feces we detected Salmonella. The blood work of the animal showed abnormal liver values and other than that it was not too bad. He was never leukopenic or had a high fever. I treated him with Ceftiofur and Enrofloxacin, as well as deworming, rumen juice, fluids, etc, but the animal deteriorated rapidly and I had to put it down. On necropsy we found the button like ulcerations in the GI tract and I think he might got toxic from the salmonella ( we are also investigating other reasons for him to deteriorate). Anyway, his buddy a 5 year old camel was also infected but does not show any clinical signs. My question is would you actually treat this camel or would you wait until it shows clinical signs? I would appreciate all your input on salmonellosis in camels.

Proposal for Publishing Camelids Encyclopedia for ISOCARD. It is a huge project if succeeded will be a complete source of information on Camelids. This will strengthen the position and credibility of ISOCARD as the best reliable source of information on Camelids. If each member is willing to help and provide me with information and images related to his or her field and specialization I am positive that the project will be successful and useful to many people involved or interested in Camelids. Some of the suggested main topics that will be covered as a start are Classification, Population, History, Breeding, Diseases, Management, Nutrition, Production and Reproduction. If anyone would like to suggest other topics or have different idea, I would like to hear from you.

Saudi Arabia… Camel Deaths Alarm Yanbu Livestock Owners

Arab News – Saudi Arabia – 9 December 2007

Over 20 camels have died in Yanbu recently after eating contaminated fodder, said livestock owners. They complained that the Ministry of Agriculture has failed to deploy vets to deal with the problem.
